Norwegian Archaeological Survey in the Karystia

In the summer of 2012 the Norwegian Institute at Athens begins the first season (permit pending) of a multi-year archaeological field project called the Norwegian Archaeological Survey in the Karystia (NASK). The project consists of the archaeological diachronic surface survey of the Katsaronio Plain in southern Euboea (the Karystia), Greece. The project is scheduled to take place over five weeks from June 4 through July 6 and will be international in character.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens would like to invite all persons interested in participating in the project to apply. The application is opened to all; however, it is primarily targeted to undergraduate and graduate university students. Participation during the entire 5-weeks length of the project is not mandatory, although slight preference will be given to people who can participate full time. The project will involve long hours of working (principally walking) in the sun as well as training in field survey and preliminary artifact processing/analysis methods. People who cannot handle heat and physical exertion and who are unable to spend long hours in the sun are discouraged from applying.

NASK will provide room and board in Karystos, Euboea free of charge for all project participants. The project participants will be responsible for all other costs (e.g., getting to and from Greece, other travel, museum visits, etc.). In 2012 the project will not operate as a field school; i.e., we will not be able to provide university credits. We will, however, be able to issue participation certificates and/or recommendation letters, if needed.

Interested persons should apply or direct inquiries by email to the project director Zarko Tankosic at ztankosi /at/ indiana.edu. Please include a short CV or résumé (max 2 pages), availability dates, and the reasons why you wish to join the project. The deadline for submitting applications is April 15, 2012. The successful candidates will be informed of our decision no later than May 1, 2012.
