The Norwegian institute at Athens for classical studies, archaeology and cultural history, was founded under the protection of the The Norwegian Association of Higher Education Institutions (UHR), and is financed and directed in collaboration between the Norwegian Universities in Bergen, Oslo, Tromsø and Trondheim. According to Greek law all foreign archaeological institutes or schools are Archaeological schools, i.e. they are non-profit research institutions.

The institute is dedicated to the teaching, research, publication and dissemination of the cultural heritage, history, archaeology and language of ancient Greece. While the main focus of the Institute's activities have been directed at the ancient cultural heritage, the study of modern Greek culture is also included in the Institute's work.

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is a resource in Greece for Norwegian academics. The Institute plays an important part when it comes to research, teaching and publishing by gaining approvals for scientific projects by Norwegian scholars in Greece. It works to facilitate scientific discussion, exchange and education. It also has as a goal, in cooperation with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Greece, to support and encourage contact on a cultural level between Norway and Greece.

The Institute has an administrative staff of three employees, and a director from one of the Norwegian Universities changing every 3-5 years.

Facts:

  • Founded the 8th of May 1989
  • Financed and directed in collaboration between the Universities in Bergen, Oslo, Tromsø and Trondheim
  • Celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009
  • Four excavation projects so far in Greece
